The accident reportedly occurred on U.S. 221 north of Marion. At 10:20 a.m. on that tragic day, a 2012 GMC truck heading south crossed the centre line and caused a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 221.

Burnsville resident Ricky McPeters, 66, was operating the truck when it collided with another northbound car. After the original collision, the truck drove south and hit a 2017 Jeep Cherokee being driven by Bakersville resident Caius Arrington, 20.

Seven individuals were involved in this horrific collision involving three automobiles. Sadly, the incident claimed the life of 21-year-old Cary resident Delaney Leierzapf. Two other people were seriously hurt and were taken to the Asheville Mission Trauma Center for medical attention.

Four collision participants chose not to be sent for medical care because they were unharmed. The 58-year-old Spruce Pine homeowner Lori McIntire was operating a 2022 Buick that was collided with.
